The Pi Kappa Alpha (PKA) fraternity at Methodist University will host several events on campus this week to raise awareness of domestic violence and support Fayetteville’s Child Advocacy Center. Several of the events are open to the public or the MU community.
The Pi Kappa Alpha (PKA) fraternity at Methodist University will host several events on campus this week to raise awareness of domestic violence and support Fayetteville’s Child Advocacy Center. Several of the events are open to the public or the MU community.
“Domestic violence is something that is an issue within any community, whether it’s in homes or college campuses,” said event coordinator and PKA member Nick Boykin. “We thought this could be a great awareness tool for not only students but the MU community as a whole to discuss all the different forms of domestic violence.”
Starting at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, there will be a short video about sexual crimes followed by a panel discussion in Berns Student Center. The panel will include Dr. Darlene Hopkins, director of MU’s Center for Personal Development; Ze Surratt, a certified victim practitioner from the Rape Crisis Center, and a representative from the Child Advocacy Center.
Tuesday’s event will be a free Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu class, open to all MU students. The class, which starts at 7 p.m. in Nimocks Fitness Center, will be taught by Rafael Jovet, head instructor and owner of Gracie Barra Jiu Jitsu Spring Lake, and will focus on personal protection.
Thursday evening, the campus Greek organizations will participate in an event with campus nurse Sandy Combs, director of Student Health Services. The Greek Speak event will focus on safe sex practices and answering student questions on related subjects. This event is not open to the public.
On Saturday, at MU’s home football game, the fraternity will present a check to the Child Advocacy Center, to donate contributions gathered throughout the week. The group plans to collect donations by selling purple ribbons at each event and during the day in the Berns Student Center. The ribbons cost $1.
