Our military service members are truly heroes, and we will always be indebted to their sacrifice to this country. As another opportunity to show appreciation, Methodist University annually invites all service members to its Military Appreciation football game.
During Family Weekend on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m., the Methodist University Monarchs will take on the Washington & Lee Generals at Monarch Stadium. Although the matchup gives the Monarchs a chance to earn their first home victory of the season, there is a much bigger opportunity to thank our service members. Military personnel will receive free admission to the game if they are able to present a military ID.
“Living and working in a military community, we see firsthand the sacrifices our military service members and their families make for our nation daily,” said Billy Buckner, director of military programs and workforce training at MU. “Our Military Appreciation football game is one small way in which we can honor, recognize, and say thank you to our military community for protecting the freedoms we enjoy today. We are extremely proud and grateful for our more than 500 military-connected students who call Methodist University home.”
The appreciation does not stop there. Before the game, fans will be able to tailgate next to Monarch stadium starting at 9 a.m. Then, prior to kickoff at 12:30 p.m., the All-Veteran Group parachute jump team will make a thrilling entrance to the stadium.
Lt. Col. Elenah Kelly, who serves as a commander of the 512 Memorial Affairs Squadron at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, will sing the national anthem. The 82nd Airborne Division All-American Chorus will perform at halftime.
For military service members interested in attending the game, remember to bring a military ID to receive free admission. General admission is $6, it’s $3 for visiting college students with an ID, and free admission to children (5-under). MU students, faculty, and staff also get in for free. If any fan is interested in tailgating beforehand, contact DeeDee Jarman at [email protected] by Sept. 14 to reserve a spot.
