The Greater Fayetteville Chamber utilizes the phrase “Can Do” often, and the more than 50 members who gathered Thursday morning had a great opportunity to hear about what host Methodist University has done and is currently doing to positively impact the Fayetteville community.
Held in the beautiful Matthews Ministry Center on the MU campus, the Chamber members were welcomed by Chamber Ambassador Gary Rogers, heard about Chamber events from Chamber President Shari Fiveash, and then enjoyed listening to special guest speaker Dr. Stanley T. Wearden, president of Methodist University.
Wearden touched on the $88.5-million economic impact MU has on Cumberland County – and the $116 million it has on North Carolina – but he also shared the mission and vision of MU.
“We have a powerful mission statement at Methodist and it’s the only one I’ve ever seen in higher education that contains the word ‘love,’” he said. “All universities have the mission to prepare students to be career ready, and we certainly do, but we want to make sure to take it further than that. We want to make sure we also prepare students for engaged citizenship and genuine moral agency.”
With a wide array of professional programs – Health Sciences, Business, Engineering, Forensics, Computer Science, and many others – and more than 60% of MU alumni remaining in Cumberland County, MU continues to solidify itself as a foundational and important member of the Fayetteville community. And education opportunities at MU are boundless.
“Nearly all (97%) of our students receive scholarships and our residential undergraduate students receive an average of more than $30,000 in aid,” Wearden said. “We have on-campus and online programs, and opportunities that are geared toward military members, veterans, and their families. We also have new agreements with multiple community colleges in the region that help facilitate the transfer from a two-year college to getting a valuable four-year degree.”
