Summer is still a few months away, but now is the perfect time to consider sending your high school student to Methodist University’s General Shelton Leadership Camp.

Through the Lura S. Tally Center for Leadership Development, the Shelton Leadership Camp is a one-week summer residential experience for rising high school students right on MU’s campus. This year’s camp is set for June 11-16, 2023 – a month earlier compared to past years.

Students will learn what it takes to become an effective leader through General H. Hugh Shelton’s cornerstones of values-based leadership: honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity and social responsibility.

“Some summer camps are activity-based and some are academically-oriented. However, the General Shelton Leadership Camp combines both physical activity and mental challenges to build an experience that tests both mind and body,” said Dr. John Edwards, camp director and associate professor for Applied Communication. “The ropes courses, groups projects and outdoor activities are all designed to build the complete person – someone  who knows they can overcome challenges and influence their peers in positive ways.”

The cost for the camp – which includes the deposit, lodging, meals, all curriculum materials, low and high ropes training, transportation and evening activities – is $600 per camper. However, applications with deposits received prior to March 1, 2023 are eligible for the Early Bird Scholarship, which provides a $200 reduction in the camp fee. To apply now, visit here.

Additional scholarships are available including the Returning Camper Scholarship ($200), Multiple Camper Scholarship ($200 if two or more siblings attend), MU Community Scholarship ($200 for campers with a staff, faculty or student at MU), and the Need-Based Scholarship (various amounts based on need).

The camp prefers rising 9th thru 12th grade student with a 3.0 GPA or higher. With only 30 campers accepted for this year, organizers recommend parents register their student as soon as possible. Campers will be selected on a first-come, first =-served basis.
