Approximately 10,000 meals packed by the Methodist University community are now headed to South Africa to help combat food insecurity.
In late August, several hundred students gathered inside Nimocks Fitness Center to pack non-perishable and healthy meals for Rise Against Hunger, a non-profit organization that will deliver the meals to people in need throughout South Africa. The meal-packing event was part of Methodist University’s CIRCUIT First Five series, a weekly gathering during the first five weeks of the semester that helped new students adjust to their new lives on campus.
One of the students who helped during the event was freshman Thando Tfwala, an international student from Eswatini, which neighbors South Africa.
“Growing up, I used to see how people were affected by hunger and poverty,” said Tfwala, who is majoring in Computer Information Technology. “Helping in the way that we’ve done makes me feel like we’re providing a helping hand. Few things are more fulfilling than that. I know this will have an impact on people affected by hunger, so I’m happy to have been part of this experience.”
The event embodies part of Methodist University’s mission, which states that programs are based on the conviction that “a liberally-educated person is sensitive to the needs and rights of others”.
