Bio:

Helms joined the staffs of his alma mater’s cross country and track and field programs in August 2013, and was named a full-time assistant coach of both programs in July 2019. Prior to joining Methodist, Helms led the cross country programs at Pine Forest High School (Fayetteville, N.C.) for two years.

Helms graduated from Methodist in May 2006 with a degree in elementary education. As a college student-athlete, he competed on three Monarch cross country teams that qualified for NCAA Southeast Regionals, and earned All-Mason-Dixon Conference honors for the distance medley relay in track and field.

In his seven seasons with the Monarch cross country teams, Helms has seen 31 of his student-athletes garner all-conference accolades, including the first two ever women cross country conference champions at Methodist while the men’s team has finished in third place at four of the last five USA South Conference championship meets.

Helms earned his master’s degree in physical education-sports administration at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in December of 2013 and currently holds a USATF Level II certification.
