Monarch Review
MU’s Journal of Research & Creativity
Welcome to the Monarch Review, a publication showcasing the best of Methodist University’s student research and creativity. The Monarch Review was published annually, in print and online, from 2014 through 2019, and comprises six volumes. The first five volumes were published in limited print runs, and all volumes remain available online.
After a two-year hiatus, this student-run journal has been restarted, with the next issue scheduled to come out in spring 2023. The journal has also moved to an exclusively online format, which will not only continue to feature any and all academic and artistic disciplines at MU, but will now also be able to better accommodate an even wider range of multimedia submissions, spanning all areas of student research and creativity at Methodist University. This, of course, includes more traditional and nontraditional written formats in the areas of research and creativity, and will also open up publication possibilities for file formats that can be posted or linked to the online journal (for example: short films, podcast episodes, and other audio/visual formats that are approved through the review process).
All Methodist University students are invited to submit outstanding work to be considered for publication. Following the model of academic publications and art juries, each submission will be anonymously reviewed by faculty members, with feedback to be provided to the student scholars and artists. Student authors/composers will then be asked to make revisions to meet the journal’s standards and the requirements of their respective academic disciplines.
In addition, the Monarch Review will publish the work of the annual winners of the endowed Dr. Sue L. Kimball Creative Writing Competition. The competition, which is open to all current MU students, is in memory of the late Dr. Kimball, who was a distinguished English professor at Methodist College from 1979 to 1999.
Mission Statement
Monarch Review is a Methodist University publication dedicated to recognizing the best of our university’s student research and creativity. By publishing student work, we showcase the scholarly and creative achievements of our students, and in so doing, foster our institution’s culture of excellence. Furthermore, in its exclusively online format, this student work will be constantly on display, and fully accessible, so that current and former Methodist University students can point to their published work, now and in the future.
