My name is Kim Genova and I am the Director of Career Services
and Parent Programs at Methodist University and most importantly,
I am the parent of a Methodist University student.
We are a unique generation that many term "helicopter parents".
We only want what is best for our children and expect to take an
active role in their lives.
Methodist University respects your feelings. We strive to keep
you informed and provide several avenues for involvement. The goals
of Parents Programs are to relieve your anxieties about being a
"college parent" and assist you in productively guiding
your students into the next phase of their lives.
While we try to protect our students from any harm, we must also
remember to allow them to make decisions on their own, force them
to accept responsibility and the hardest of all, allow them to fail.
Lessons are learned from failure; character is built; and responsible
adults are created. Trust that you have armed your child with all
they need to succeed and allow them to prove to you that you’ve
raised an adult ready to take on the challenges of the world.
I know from first-hand experience that this is not an easy task
and one of my jobs is to assist you with this process. I will send
bi-weekly email updates of campus information, monthly newsletters
with information specifically for the college parent and Monarch
Parent newsletters
once a semester.
I encourage you to get involved in the Parents Association. We
have a Yahoo! Group at
where you can converse with other parents of MU students. We are
also in the process of evolving the Association into a viable entity
in the MU community. You can be a part of this even from a distance!
Career Services has opportunities
for parents to become mentors for MU students. We also encourage
parents to take part in community service opportunities on campus.
During Freshman Orientation, you will have the opportunity to
meet with Academic Advisors, staff and faculty of the Methodist
University community and on Thursday evening, we will hold a Parents
mixer in the Reeves Auditorium. We ask that Parents say their goodbyes
on Friday, August 15th at 4:00 p.m. There are many activities planned
for the students to welcome them to the MU community. I will be
in my office from 4PM until ??? to assist parents. My office is
located on the first floor of the Berns Student Center beside the
Green & Gold Cafeteria. Please stop by for some coffee and comfort
if needed.
The first Parents Program event will be Family Weekend 2008, Experience
the Monarch Spirit October 17-19. Information can be found at http://www.methodist.edu/Parents/events.htm
and brochures will be mailed shortly.
If you have any questions or concerns about your student, Methodist
University or Parents Programs, please do not hesitate to contact
me at (910) 630-7257 or
I look forward to working with you and your students. Again, welcome
Methodist University Monarch Parents!
