Description: 

This year's Womack Lectures will be in concert with the David McCune Art Gallery's "The Story of the Exodus" exhibition of Marc Chagall's Exodus lithographs. Dr. Brian Britt will discuss these lithographs as part of the "reception" of the Book of Exodus. The first lecture is scheduled for 11 a.m. and the second is scheduled for 7 p.m.

  • 11 am: “New Tablets for a New World: The Book of Exodus in Chagall’s Moses”
  • 2 pm: “New Tablets for a New World: The Jewish Modernism of Chagall’s Moses”

About the Speaker

Brian Britt (Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible, University of Chicago,1992) is professor in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech. His research interests include the Hebrew Bible, Walter Benjamin, modern religious thought, religion and literature, and theory of religion and culture. His most relevant book for the Womack Lectures is Rewriting Moses: The Narrative Eclipse of the Text (London: T & T Clark, 2004). But, he has also written books on biblical curses (Biblical Curses and the Displacement of Tradition [Sheffield Phoenix Press, 2011]) and on Walter Benjamin (Walter Benjamin and the Bible [Continuum, 1996]; Postsecular Benjamin [Northwestern University Press, 2016]).
