Description:

As part of Fayetteville’s annual Lafayette Birthday Celebration, Davis Memorial Library at Methodist University presents “Letters from the Battlefield” on Friday, Sept. 13. The event will feature the hand-written correspondence of two young men who fought for liberty in wars 200 years apart, including Fayetteville’s namesake, The Marquis de Lafayette.

A reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with the program following at 6 p.m. The event is free of charge and open to the public. It will highlight de Lafayette, who risked his life to fight for the cause of American freedom during the Revolutionary War, as well as Fayetteville native William “Bill” Mitchell Shaw III, who made the ultimate sacrifice on a battlefield in France.

The program will narrate the lives of both young men through the letters they wrote home. Shaw’s sister, Gillie Shaw Revelle, will talk about the importance of the letters he wrote to his family back home.

Note:  This program was originally scheduled for Sept. 6 as part of the “Arias & Artifacts” program and concert.  The concert was held as scheduled; the library program was rescheduled due to Methodist University’s closure during Hurricane Dorian.
