Library closed May 27, 2013

The library will be closed for Memorial Day on May 27th. We will be open again on Tuesday, May 28th on our regular schedule.

The Printed Kaleidoscope

The new issue of DML's Printed Kaleidoscope is now available online! Click on the picture of the issue on the right hand side to read about new things that are happening at the library.

Double Sided Printing at DML

New printers are now available for use at the library! These printers are able to double side print but only by setting it manually.

For Microsoft Word 2010 – Go to Print and choose ‘Print on Both Sides (flip pages on long edge)' under Settings/Pages.

For Firefox – Go to File -> Print -> Properties and choose 2-sided long edge under ‘2-sided printing’

Other programs have similar options but please ask the circulation staff for assistance if you have any questions. Thank you!

Library Chat Service

Davis Memorial Library has launched a new chat reference system, LibraryH3lp! On the left side of the website, you may have noticed the ‘chat is offline’ message. Whenever a librarian is online, that message will be replaced with an icon that you simply have to click to begin chatting with a librarian. Chat to get help with your research for your upcoming papers or presentations, citation help, and more.

Change in Booking Policy for Library Study Rooms

• All study rooms should be booked at the circulation desk. If you use a room without booking it, you run the risk of losing the room at any time to somebody that books it.
• Group study rooms can be booked for a maximum of four hours.
• Individual study rooms (carrels) can be booked for a maximum of two hours.
• You have 15 minutes from the beginning of your booking to claim your study room. If you are not in your study room within the first 15 minutes, your booking will be canceled.
• To book a group study room, there must at least two people in your group.

Along with our already established Facebook page, the library has finally decided to venture into the world of Twitter. Feel free to follow us and we’ll make sure that you receive up-to-date library information via our tweets. See you there!

All New Library Laptops Available!

Great news at DML! 25 new Lenovo Thinkpads are now available for circulation! These sleek looking laptops have the potential to make midterms and paper writing easier and even, dare we say it, enjoyable. Hopefully these laptops will make the transition period during the renovation easier for everyone. Come by and check them out!

Noise Reducing Headphones Available

Due to the current renovations at the library and the noise accompanying it, the library has purchased noise reducing headphones to be used in the library only. Noise reducing headphones are used to decrease background noise while listening to music, movies, audiobooks, etc. Just stop by the front desk to check a pair out. When checking out headphones, please specify noise reduction headphones. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Need a Quiet Place to Study?

The library has three group study rooms and two individual study rooms available upstairs away from the construction noise. These rooms may be booked at the Circulation Desk or by calling (910) 630-7645. Thank you for your patience as the library is renovated.

Kindles at the Library

The DM Library now has several Kindles available to check out, pre-loaded with all the classics! Don't want to carry around that huge book for literature class? Just check out a Kindle. Free e-books can also be downloaded onto the Kindle. So if you find one you like, just let the library staff know, and we will download it for you. The library has three regular Kindles and one Kindle Touch.

Library Renovation

By now almost everyone knows that big changes are in store for the MU campus. What you may not know is that the library has been bumped to the top of the renovations list.

In September contractors will begin renovations on the north wing (old side of the library, facing the bell tower). This means we'll have to move or cover all the books (about 100,000 of them!) in that section of the library.

In order to provide access to our collections, we will be pulling a "best of" collection that will be housed in what is now the reference area of the library. The remaining books will be boxed up and stored until the library renovations are completed. Books in storage will not be accessible during the renovations.

Access to our journal articles and over 135,000 e-books and will be unaffected. As always, our staff will be glad to help you find materials for your research, whether via print, online, or interlibrary loan. We ask your patience and understanding during this time of transition.

Computer Use Policy Reminder

Effective August 1, 2011, All patrons must have a current MU ID in order to use the library's computers. The only exception will be recent MU graduates. For one academic year after graduation, graduates will retain access to all in-house access to the library resources except off-campus database usage. We apologize for any inconvenience that this new policy may cause. However, with the large increase of incoming students the library cannot accommodate everyone.

Remote Access

When you are researching from off-campus, you still have access to the library's electronic resources. After you click on the name of the database (i.e. Academic Search Complete or Science Direct), you will be prompted for your email user name (everything before the @ symbol) and your email password. If you have any questions, please ask at the reference desk, call 630-7123, or email to reference@methodist.edu.

Library competency schedule

• The schedule of sessions through June 2013 is now on the website. You can register online.
• All students must pass, with a grade of 70 percent or better, the Library competency before completing 60 semester hours at Methodist University.

Individualized Research Assistance

• If you need extra time with a reference librarian for your research papers, register online for individualized research assistance (IRA).
• IRAs involve having a one-on-one session with a librarian to help you get started on your research papers. They will guide you through the appropriate resources for your assignments and will be glad to help you with new search tactics. Register here today.
