Investing in Lives . . . Changing Futures
Dear
Friends of Methodist University:
A big part of the responsibility of any public official is to insure that our taxpayer dollars are wisely invested. This is a challenging task at every level, given the many needs we are faced with and all of the worthwhile organizations that are doing good work.
Among my highest priorities is funding for education, which is the key to our future as a state and nation. That is why I value Methodist University as an integral partner in educating professionals to meet the needs of our community and of our state. Methodist is addressing the shortage of healthcare workers in North Carolina by expanding its outstanding Physician Assistant Program and through the development of a new nursing program. Methodist's innovative programs in Justice provide our state with law enforcement professionals trained in forensic science, clandestine labs, and, beginning in 2010, cyber security. Methodist has and will continue to produce many of the entrepreneurs, business leaders, educators, and social workers who make our community a better place to live. They are our co-workers, our neighbors, our committee members in civic, social, and faith organizations, and our friends.
Methodist University has been a jewel in our midst for more than half a century. What is so impressive about Methodist is that it accomplishes its mission with relatively little state investment as compared to our public universities. Though our state budget does not allow us to support private universities at the same level as public, our 36 private universities are vital in educating North Carolina students. They enroll 80,000 students each year, over half of whom are from North Carolina and grant almost one-third of the baccalaureate degrees awarded annually in the state. Private universities, including Methodist, depend upon individuals and businesses in their communities for scholarships and other support. Over ninety percent of Methodist University students receive scholarships or other financial assistance.
That is why I am asking you to join me in making your gift to Loyalty Day 2010 in support of student scholarships at Methodist University. You will be "investing in lives and changing futures," not only for the students who are transformed by the education that scholarship funds help underwrite, but also for the citizens of our community who benefit from having Methodist and its graduates among us.
Best regards,

Margaret Highsmith Dickson

my education at Methodist College. Small classes afforded

| “The small, supportive environment and liberal arts
focus of Methodist College prepared me to become a productive
citizen. The strong academic background, and the preparation
that I had in my major enabled me to be successful in the
classroom right from the start, and as I went on to graduate
school.”

| "As we travel through life we make pathway choices
that affect our future. It was a real joy to advise two of
my daughters to follow my path to Methodist College, so they
too may benefit from some of the same educational and life
experiences that I was afforded."

| "I had no idea when I was at MC what my career would
be but higher education was certainly not on my radar screen
at that time. At MC, I learned how to think, how to learn
and gained confidence (in Dr. Ott's chemistry course among
others!) that I could learn anything if I worked hard enough.
I will always be grateful to the MC faculty, staff, administrators,
and donors for providing me this transforming experience that
has served me so well in my academic life and career in higher
education."

| “I credit much of my success as a professional golfer
to the time I spent at Methodist College. Although a Division
III school, Methodist’s golf facilities rivaled and
sometimes surpassed those of Division I schools. The PGM program
gave me the opportunity to participate in premier tournaments,
live in a central location close to many great courses and
enjoy one-on-one attention from professors, advisors and coaches.
The small school and family environment created an atmosphere
allowing students to look out for each other and establish
lifelong friendships. The friendships and connections I made
through the PGM program have benefited me both personally
and professionally. One of the most comforting things to see
when I am on tour is the familiar faces of my Methodist College
friends.”

| "I fell in love with Methodist College from the very
first day! Somehow, I knew that this beautiful campus was
a place where I would be gently nurtured and aggressively
challenged . . . in equal measure. I knew that this distinguished
community of scholars and students would provide invaluable
tools to build a successful career. Most importantly, I knew
instinctively that I would find faith and friendships at Methodist
that would enrich my life beyond scope. My Methodist College
experience has done all those things for me--I am honored
to be among its family of alumni."
