Academic Advising

Academic Advising

Here at Methodist University (MU), we follow a decentralized model of academic advising, with a few exceptions.  A decentralized model of academic advising means that students here at MU are assigned an academic advisor who is a professor in the major course of study that has been declared by the student. If a student decides to change his or her major, then a new academic advisor is assigned.

The three major exceptions to this model are as follows:

  1. The first time a new student enrolls in classes, he or she works with a temporary academic advisor (or the summer or between semesters, when many faculty members are not required to be on campus). These temporary academic advisors consist of the members of the Academic Services Staff, plus a few faculty members who are selected to handle highly technical majors.

  2. Any student who has not declared a major is considered “Exploratory” here at MU. All students who are considered Exploratory are assigned to a member of Academic Services, and that individual works with the student to determine and declare the appropriate major. Sometimes, students who are in a major but are considering changing majors will also consult with this person.

  3. Any student who is enrolled at MU through the Methodist Academic Achievement Program (MAAP) is assigned to a member of the Academic Services Staff as the academic advisor for the first two semesters of his or her journey here at MU. After completion of the first two semesters, all MAAP students are then released from the MAAP, and assigned to an academic advisor who is a professor in the major course of study that has been declared by the student.

Academic advising is an important part of any student’s educational experience. Here at MU, we take that responsibility very seriously. We try to establish a relationship of trust with all our students, through both one-on-one advising sessions and group meetings with all members of the various academic departments.
